Our Mission

 

Founded in 1997,  Dallas Black Gay & Lesbian  Pride, Inc. in conjunction with Elm & Pearl Night Club formaly (The Metro) serves  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people of African descent by providing, on a year round basis, educational seminars and cultural events that are vital to the resilience and vitality of the community it represents. These human services programs seek to arm participants with the tools  to respond to and withstand the stresses of prejudice, discrimination, bigotry, violence and poor health prevalent to LGBT community.  Dallas Black Gay & Lesbian  Pride produces an annual multicultural festival  during the last week of September until the first week of October.  Hosting an array of events, seminars and forums.

 

Our mission is to promote empowerment of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community of African descent.  DBGLP is established to:  Expand the community based organization support network *Heighten visibility of positive media images * Develop outreach and referral programs * Broaden support of local artisans * Foster institutional research * Increase and sustain economic self sufficiency * Create "Safe Spaces" for the  LGBT community * Empower all youth

All of the various celebrations throughout the world are unique; however, there is one common element: the gay pride or rainbow flag.  This symbol was the creation of Gilbert Baker in response to local activists saying that the community needed a symbol of unity, and was unveiled during the San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Festival in 1978.  Its design was actually inspired by the earlier black civil rights and "hippie" movements.  And today, even the International Association of Flag Manufacturers has acknowledged the flag.  The rainbow flag has become the most visible icon of the GLBT community, and is a symbol that is recognized worldwide.  The community has united with pride, determination and diversity under its colors.  

 

Each color of the flag was designed to have a different meaning:
